Extract from the speech of Her Majesty the Queen of England Elisabeth II about the three Baltic States during her visit to Lithuania in 2006. „You have freed yourselves from the Soviet Union shadow and blossomed as independent states, occupying your legitimate position in the international society and becoming reputable members of NATO and the European Union. Those were astonishing political, economic and social changes, which have no equals in the European history. We must never forget what Lithuania suffered on its way to freedom. Massacres, tortures and exiles that lasted for years are one of the darkest episodes in the history of our continent.”
