The Year One Thousand and Nine

Baptism of the Duke Netimeras by St Bruno“In the year 1009, St Bruno otherwise called Boniface, archbishop and monk, in the eleventh year of his conversion, was killed by pagans at the Russian and Lithuanian border and went to Heaven together with 18 of his people on the 9th of March”.

This short entry found in German chronicles of the beginning of the 11th century - Quedlinburg Annals of St Servatius Convent - includes the first mention of the name of Lithuania in Europe in 1009well-known written historic sources. Although Baltic tribes living on the Eastern coastline of the Baltic Sea which formed Lithuanian nation and state of Lithuania had been mentioned by Publius Cornelius Tacitas at the times of Roman Empire, due to its geographic position Lithuania was always alienated from political and cultural relations of Europe. Historic records of the 8th century were certainly the first to mention other Baltic tribe - the Prussians. In the 9th century Einhard, a biographer of the emperor of Franks Charles the Great, and Vulfstan, German merchant, called the Balts Aestis.
